Top Layer

What do geochronologists call the top layer of the geologic column?
Has anyone else noticed that all the dead things come out of the top layer? The dinosaur bones, trilobytes, bird bones, human bones, etc. are all found just below the surface of the ground.

Oddly enough, it turns out to be the same layer the dead things used to live on.
