What size crochet hook should I use for my stitches to be 1/4 of an inch apart?

I need my stitches to be 1/4 of an inch apart, what size crochet hook should I use? Thanks!!

The gauge depends on the size of the yarn and tension of the person crocheting.
Generally the pattern will specify what hook size to use, but that is only a suggestion.
The best thing to do is work up a swatch to check your gauge. If no hook size is
recommended, start with a J hook if the pattern is an afghan or an I hook if the
pattern is clothing, as these are the most common.
