Are bracketless (floating) shelves like the ones sold in retail stores sturdy enough to use as bookshelves?

If the support bracket is mounted into the wall studs, would the rods upon which the shelf sits be able to handle the load of a row of books?

I think they may be a bit risky, but so long as you don't put it in a place where it's likely to fall on someone's head I guess you could try it. Does the pack that the shelf system comes in not have any information on how much load they will bear?

If not, and you can find a fairly knowledgeable person in the store you buy it, why not ask them?
