Pattern Dress

can someone tell me what a dress pattern is?
i asked how to make a dress and they all said something about a dress pattern.
1. what is it?
2. can you show me a picture of what it looks like?
If you go into a craft store like Jo-Ann Fabric or AC Moore, there will be a table set up with big books spread upon it. Sit down at the table and look through the books for a dress you like. When you find it, write down the number on the page, it'll probably be something like M5605. Depending on what book you were looking through (McCall, Vogue, Butterick, Simplicity), you'll have to find the drawers that are for that brand. Once you do, look at the numbers and figure out which drawer your number is in, then open it up and find your pattern in there. The pattern will basically be a paper stencil. You'll have to cut out pieces, pin them to your fabric, then cut out your fabric. It'll also include directions on how to sew everything together.
