Where is the best place to be married/united (legally) if you are a gay or lesbian couple?

My partner and I are trying to find the places in Europe where we can be married/united/partnered legally. We are also trying to find out which of these places is the best, most accepting place to live if you are a gay/lesbian couple. If any of you have your own experiences with being a legally married same sex couple please share the ups and downs (respected rights and abuses) of being married where you live.
