How does one go from casual flirting to being avoided?

So there is a guy I like and I thought he liked me back. he seemed to try to take the same bus as I after school, walked me home, made googly eyes at each other, flirted, etc. Then when I saw him at this party, he gave me a really flirty hello, but after that he kept leaving every time I came near him...and kept being around this skanky chick (of course) who by the way was uglier than I am.
